The road bike was built last weekend (the one before Vday). Shifting was marginal- seemed like it was because my derailleur was sitting crooked. Brand new carbon frame, so bent derailleur hanger was unlikely. My derailleur was probably just worn out- I've owned it for 5 years, it came to me used (either via the Swap, the Devil or Skreech). Its been crashed and abused a lot. In fact, the 105 is almost worn off. I figured I'd arrange for a "spare" one to be shipped down.
Today I struggled with a 12 mile group ride- automatic shifting, freight train noises, etc. On top of that, I was trying to get Sideburnz a job at a local shop. What a way to show off his mechanic skillz.
So, I was chatting with the dudes after the ride and noticed that the cassette on my bike WASN'T my 11-23. I thought things had gone awfully well considering my gearing. Once I returned home, I counted the gears. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9....10? 10 speed? WTF?
Then, the moment of enlightenment. Rewind to bike building frenzy. Sideburnz was going nuts building bikes. Road wheels were packed with the road frame and the rest of the pieces. Last time road wheels were used- CX nats, as my trainer wheel for my 10 SPEED CX bike. Cassette never got switched. Sideburnz never knew. I forgot. 9 speed cassette was still in the box of goodies from my road bike. All of my pissing and moaning about a new derailleur might be for nought. I hate spending money on road bikes.
Cassette still needs to get switched. Pretty sure 11-23 will make me cry, but 9 speeds will work SOOOOO much better than 10. I guess that's how I'll get fast. I missed my bikes.
