I guess my fatness got the better part of my brain this weekend. Instead of revising my grant application and planning my summer class, I decided to propel myself around the island this weekend.
My trek started on Saturday with a 6.4 mile trail run that took almost 2 hours. The terrain was challenging to say the least. I spent 30 minutes crawling up the Kolowalu trail (no kidding, here). Elevation gain 1,100 feet in 1 mile of trail. Yes, I was crawling. This was my first long trail run in 7 years. This was also my first run over 4 miles in 6 or 7 years. My knees were pretty pissed, but no permanent damage.
I guess I didn't deplete my glycogen stores enough on Saturday, and I told Sideburnz that we needed to go on a bike adventure. We decided to ride the Maunawili trail on CX bikes. Our trip started with a 10 mile ride up the Pali Highway. The we proceeded for 9.3 miles on the trail. Lots of hike-a-bike at the beginning. Towards the end of the trail, things were much more rideable, but my brain and body weren't able to keep the bike going straight. Our journey left the dirt near Waimanalo.

Near by was an L&L Drive Inn, perfect post 5 hour bike ride food. We had thought about riding 20 miles back to Honolulu, but both of us were pretty beat. TheBus was a better option. Unfortunately, Sideburnz got a flat on the way to the bus stop, which resulted in us barely missing the bus. Sunday bus service isn't so great, but the alternative (riding home) was less desireable. After an hour of chillin' at the bus stop, the 57A finally picked us up. Nothing like riding the bus on Sunday afternoon is muddy, stinky, spandex. Sunday's trip clocked 5 hrs 15 minutes and 25.3 miles.
The Aftermath: This morning Sideburnz got a good laugh as I eased myself down the stairs- holding on to both railings, lowing my body with my arms, not my legs. Thank goodness he hauled my bike down for me. I probably would have collapsed.
Today was the one and only day of finals for me as a prof. Now its grading, grant writing, and the like.
